Greek Myth Remix

Diana's past is swirled in with greek mythology (yes i still have the mixer from my last post on my mind.  it was amazing people!).  She was brought to life by the gods, she's been blinded by medusa, had to rescue Ares' love child from the mother, had her sight restored to her by her by Athena, and been told "you're on your own," by Zeus. Mind you not in that order, but you get the idea.

Plus she's an AMAZON. i mean their origins are in greek mythology.  myth i say. because it is myth that a chick would cut off her boob.  seriously.  elective?  is shooting an arrow really that important?

but i digress.  recently i went to an event called comicaze in los angeles. it was the first of its kind and i have to say it was quite a wonderful experience. it was a mix of everything.  it was what comic con used to be before the networks took it over.

what i love about conventions, the small ones, is you really get to talk shop with other creators.  as i am putting together a comic book, i was really happy to be able to spend a few with other writers and get to know their process as well as what they are up to.  therefore i found it fitting that i came across a fellow writer with a fun take on greek mythology. one that i thought to share.

i met Tom at comickaze and apart from being a totally chill guy to talk with about working with artists, he also told me about his book, which is totally fitting for this blog.

"Hybrid Bastards"is a fun book about Hera getting all ticked at Zeus sleeping around with mortal honeys so she slips him a lil' something that makes him sleep around with ANYTHING for a full 24 hours.  eighteen years later, he starts paying the price for his hybrid bastards. see i used the title there.  clever, yes i am  :)

anyways with me a soon to be indie comic writer i think it's essential to support our own, and with this tying into mythology and with Wonder Woman's greek past, I thought this would be a great book to check out!  It's a lot of fun and no you don't need to be well versed in the classics.  Just watch an episode of "cheaters" on late night and you'll be fine.

so check it out and if you have any recommendations of comics under my radar, mythology ties optional, feel free to leave a comment here or hit me up on twitter!

It started with tea...

i have a huge day tomorrow, personally and professionally.  so i've been downing tea like nobody's business.  i start realizing as i'm downing said tea, that each bag comes with a little saying at the end of the string.  most of them encouraging, positive, but this last one struck a chord. it read:

"You will feel fulfilled when you do the impossible for someone else."

it made me realize that all the plans in the world could potentially fall through, plans that i imagined would create happiness, create fulfillment, and yet one simple act that isn't premeditated, one that is in its essence selfless would probably be the most fulfilling of all.  so i started scouring the internet, looking for something, someone that needed to be heard.

CAST LA is an organization that fights against human slavery and trafficking all over the world, but also makes the clear distinction of fighting such atrocities on our own soil as well.

Those are the voices i have failed to hear, those in my own country, in my own city.

May their mission motivate you to search out for others whose freedoms, rights and wants seem an impossibility.  we can all make the impossible happen for others, no matter how small.

in that way, we are all wonder women ;)

Happy Vets Day!

Wishing all wonderful vets a wonderful veterans day.  you deserve it, being our nation's supermen and superwomen.

In other news.  My friend posted this on my wall.  I don't cook... but I may now.

or maybe i'd just mix things together and dump them out.  or just use it for my milk and cereal.  christmas anyone?  anyone? ;)

Work it out.

So recently giving myself a long overdue clean bill of health, i decided that the best thing to do was get back on the wagon with working out.  insanely nervous, mind you, but sick of being sick.

there is always the negative rag you hear about hollywood being the city of people trying to constantly get thin.  well fine.  but aside from smoking (wonder woman no no) the silver lining in all this is that there are so many means to get in shape, which is perfect if you're like me and falter at self motivation.  tons of classes, instructors, gyms, the sky's the limit.

i started with yelp and a phone chat with my mom.  she likes keeping abreast of fitness trends, mostly because she reads the gossip mags.  so whilst talking she mentioned a class she and i took involving some ballet-esque class involving a bar.  i have one of those minds where i fail miserably at multi tasking while i type, so i typed ballet bar class in the search.  found one.

now the class i took in san diego, imma level with you, wasn't my cup of tea.  it was slow, contorting, and the two extremes of sensation that i would feel throughout the class would alternate between feeling nothing beneficial or painful (my leg bone is popping out of my socket mindset).  so not positive.

The studio that popped up was cardio barre.  looked about the same.  ballet moves involving a bar.  went on the website, read the description, wasn't too impressed.  now with everything in hollywood, if you have celebs that frequent your establishment, it's best to name drop.  i get it. business!  so i click to see what's going on in that section.  lo and behold, who do i see?!

lucy lawless.

granted you may be thinking... "so what?" yes the actor's current "she's in that" is lucretia from spartacus: naked men fighting, but my introduction to the wig toting lady dominus was when she was xena: warrior princess.

if there was ever anything close to a live action wonder woman series post lynda carter, it would be that.  first off, warrior princess.  done and done.  and she had blue eyes and black hair.  done.  AND amazons were even involved in the series and i think at some point they inducted her or something.  bottom line: wonder woman.

and let's not forget the fact that she actually did voice wonder woman in the Justice League: The New Frontier animated movie where she ran around beheading people.  Morality, what? Warrior win!

Needless to say i took ALL of this as a sign: this would be the class to take.  Firm in my morale, i went to the class this morning... and loved it!

Where it differs from the aforementioned class is that it's not slow paced at all.  in fact it moves very quickly from one thing to the next. hence the... wait for it... cardio.  i took the beginner and though i made it through it was only because i had a background in dance to begin with (thanks jazz!) so if you're not familiar with ballet terms (first to fifth position, attitudes, etc) then you may want to take the intro.

overall a serendipitous find!  will keep at it and hopefully this will be the start to fall fabulous Amazon Princess ;)

Inspiration Wall

Batman has his batcave. Superman has is fortress of solitude. So what does wonder woman have? Paradise Island? Hmmmm....

Regardless this is what I have. It's nice to look up and get inspired.

What's your inspiration?
